DOST transforms its science library into creative learning hub for students and pros

Gone are the days when libraries were just repositories for books and research as the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) hosted its second Library Makerspace Activity featuring a talk on digital branding, where students and professionals learned how to craft and design impactful digital assets, even as beginners.

For a day, the DOST-STII Library evolved into a vibrant, creative hub where knowledge, innovation, and creativity intersect.

“Ang ating library ay hindi lang lugar para sa books at research—it’s also a creative hub kung saan nagkakaroon ng intersection ang knowledge, innovation, at creativity. Sa pamamagitan ng workshops tulad nito, layunin naming ma-empower kayong lahat na mag-explore, mag-experiment, at magkaroon ng bagong skills na magagamit nyo sa future projects,” said DOST-STII Head Librarian Lynderlitte M. Maglaque in her welcome remarks.

(Our library isn’t just a place for books and research—it’s also a creative hub where knowledge, innovation, and creativity intersect. Through workshops like this, we aim to empower all of you to explore, experiment, and gain new skills that you can use in your future projects.)

The session for the digital branding workshop featured Andrea Mei B. Resane, science research specialist II from the Communication Resources and Production Division of the DOST-STII, as the resource speaker.

Currently the social media manager for the S&T Post and DOST-STII, and the focal person for the national Oras Pinas campaign, Resane provided participants with "behind-the-scenes" insights into creating engaging viral reels and digital content seen on official DOST platforms.

At the end of the session, she highlighted that creating a brand takes time and discipline.

“Hindi one-time, big time ang branding. Need ulit-ulitin hanggang matanggap nila ang brand,” she said.

(Branding isn't a "one-time, big-time" deal. You have to keep repeating it until the brand truly sticks with them.)

Angelita C. Castro, a college instructor who accompanied her students from The Bearer of Light and Wisdom Colleges, Inc., expresses deep appreciation for the seminar-workshop, saying that as a self-described traditional teacher, she feels refreshed by the learning experience.

“Hindi ako high-tech dahil traditional na teacher ako pero it really helps me a lot at ‘yon pong mga process, yun pong nalalaman ko ay medyo quite obsolete na pero it refreshes me na malaki po yung matutulong ko, lalo na sa lower-level ng mga Marketing students,” she said.

(I’m not exactly tech-savvy since I’m a traditional teacher, but this has been incredibly helpful. My knowledge of these processes was becoming quite obsolete, so this serves as a great refresher that will allow me to better support my lower-level Marketing students.)

Likewise, psychology student Joenna Buegues from the National University shared that she learned how important crafting a brand is, especially for her desire to be a mental health advocate one day.

“Sa akin, very helpful siya, since psychology ang course ko, and nakikita ko in the future na magpu-pursue ako na maging advocate ng mental health, and gusto kong makaabot sa malawakang scale na target. Importante ang design sa pagpapakita ng message sa tao, lalo na ngayon na digital world. Hindi na enough na nagsasalita ka lang ng boses, dapat kaya mo ring maipakita iyong mensahe mo through images, shapes, and colors,” said.

(Personally, I find this very helpful since I’m a Psychology major and I plan to become a mental health advocate in the future. I want to reach a broad audience, and design is crucial in conveying a message, especially in today's digital world. It’s no longer enough to just use your voice; you also need to be able to communicate your message through images, shapes, and colors.)
