N. Mindanao researchers convene to talk regional R&D gaps

BUTUAN CITY— DOST Northern Mindanao researchers convened at the 2026 Mindanao Cluster Call Conference recently to align regional research and development (R&D) priorities with national goals, focusing on critical sectors such as health, agriculture, energy, and emerging technologies.

The conference is centered on addressing the specific R&D gaps in Mindanao.

Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, presented the Mindanao Cluster’s overall R&D priorities, which included a special focus on Northern Mindanao's needs. He highlighted that “the industrial hub, focusing on 5G/6G ecosystems and Cagayan de Oro's metropolitan development” should be prioritized to foster growth in the region’s digital infrastructure and urban planning.

Likewise, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation, stating that, “science, technology, and innovation must directly serve the Filipino people while protecting lives, strengthening industries, and creating quality jobs. We prepared today so that the Philippines can thrive tomorrow. Our goal is that Filipino talent is at the center of national development. But this is not one agency’s job; it is only through the collective efforts of our Filipino researchers, scientists, and engineers that we as a country will be able to reach this vision for an STI-driven economic development.” His words underscored the critical role that innovation plays in national development

Northern Mindanao researchers actively participated by presenting their R&D proposals, receiving valuable feedback and guidance from DOST experts and sectoral councils. These proposals reflected the region’s unique needs and challenges, aiming to foster sustainable development and technological innovation.

The Mindanao Cluster Call Conference is part of a series of similar events held in Luzon and Visayas, all organized by DOST to promote collaboration between national and regional research institutions. Hosted by DOST Caraga in Mindanao, the conference helps ensure that the region’s scientific and technological needs are effectively represented and supported. With continued participation, Northern Mindanao stands to benefit from future funding opportunities and further advancements in regional R&D.
